Glynn sets up and Burge finishes off...

East Molesey 1^st team vs Valley End 1^stteam

The moles first home league fixture of the year provided spectators with a thrilling encounter with newly promoted Valley End CC. Valley End, who have cruised there way through the lower leagues were stopped in there tracks by a seasoned Molesey side missing a few names.

Skipper Paul Lawford won the toss and elected to bowl first. 17 year old Andrew ‘poop poop’ Westphal and Nuno Bernardes opened the bowling attack and probed away well at the two VECC openers. At the 10 over mark VECC had just 28 on the board but a change in bowling swung the game back in Valley Ends favour. The usually reliable Henry Glynn, nursing a partially torn quad, struggled and it showed as his 3 over’s went for 18. Simon Barrett who after taking 4-18 last week was unable to recapture the same success and also went for 18 runs off his 3 overs. This brought around a change in bowling by Lawford. He turned to the spin of Ross ‘prawn’ Paxton and New Zealander Henry Nicholls and with it brought immediate success. Both taking 2 wickets a piece and going for a total 62 runs in 20 overs swung the momentum back in the Moles favour. Ben Campbell then entered the attack and ran riot, claiming 5-17 and finishing off the Valley End resistance. The VE batsman seemed to find ways of getting themselves out and failed to bat out there full entitlement of overs...perhaps a bit of inexperience was to blame.

So with 175 from 50 overs required, Moles opened again with Team H. Henry Nicholls and Henry Glynn. Nicholls fell victim to a LBW decision for four to the ex Cobham Avorian Steve Harpley in the fourth over. First class centurion Simon Barrett then joined Glynn at the crease and the pair went about taking apart the Valley End bowling attack. Barrett then fell victim to a dubious LBW decision for a solid 19. Lawford joined the fray as Henry Glynn continued attacking the Valley End bowling. Well ahead of the run rate, Glynn then fell LBW to another dubious LBW decision and suddenly Valley End were back in the game. Left hander George Cairns joined Lawford and the pair continued to tick things over nicely in the middle over’s, however, Cairns then departed for 16 and the impressive looking Lawford was then subject to a questionable run out which swung the momentum right back in Valley Ends favour. The Valley enders spinners bowled well in the middle over’s and really tightened the noose but the strength and depth of the Molesey batting line up showed with Kieran Burge and Neil Campbell both seeing things home with 1 over to spare. Burge was particularly impressive with his 29 not out considering he was unable to run due to an injury acquired whilst fielding.

So once again a weaker then expected bowling performance from the Moles was good enough to do a job whist the batting is showing signs of improvement which has much been required for the last few years. Many thanks goes to the Groundsman for his superb effort in preparing a wicket that was not only playable but played well. Especially with the three weeks solid rain that we have had to endure. Next week the Moles play host to the unpredictable Purley CC.

In a closely fought encounter at Graburn Way, East Molesey prevailed against a combative Old Emanuel side.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Old Emanuel got off to a flying start scoring freely from the first couple of overs before Henry Glynn and Nuno Bernardes regained control. Jack Miller, Ross Paxton and Simon Barrett were then able to squeeze the Old Emanuel batsman with their spin and runs were hard to come by. As is often the way at Molesey, the river end boundary was attacked and a few balls ended up in the Thames – credit here goes to George Cairns who came back from some lusty Old Emanuel hitting to pick up two wickets. Old Emanuel had a lot to thank their opening bat for. He batted sensibly, mixing aggression with sound judgement and was able to shepherd his team to a total of 131 in their 20 overs. With a used pitch and slow outfield, the target would prove challenging even for the Moles’ lengthy batting line-up.

Cairns and Glynn set about their work in aggressive fashion both scoring at the required rate of over a run-a-ball, playing their full range of attractive strokes, before falling in the 30s. Simon Barrett, batting at 3, fell to a smart piece of cricket by the Old Emanuel off-spinner and was out stumped for 5. This signalled a change in the momentum and a period of tidy bowling pushed the Moles behind the rate. Enter club stalwarts Paul Lawford and Kieran Burge. With 8-an-over required from the last 3, sixes for Lawford and then Burge swung the momentum back to the home side. With 2 required from 7 balls, Lawford fell for an invaluable 32 trying to finish the match. This left Burge to see the side home which he duly did, scampering a single to go with a wide from the first ball of the final over.

East Molesey now face an away tie against the winners of Old Wimbledonians v Ashtead. Second round matches must be played by 25 May and we would appreciate it if the fantastic home support we had on Monday could travel with us in the second round.

East Molesey 1^st XI vs Cheam 1^st XI

Last Saturday saw EMCC visit Cheam for the first game of the season to kick off their 2012 Surrey Championship campaign. With three weeks of continual rain, the chances of even starting the match were looking slim but due to the keenness of both sides and the experience of two decent league umpires, play commenced after a few hours delay. The format was revised to 30 overs a side with bowlers restricted to 6 over’s each. The Moles skipper, evergreen Paul Lawford won the toss and elected to field first. The Moles opened up with 17 year old Andrew Westphal and Henry Glynn. The Moles knew from previous encounters that Cheam rely heavily upon the dominant Danny Miller with the bat so keeping him quiet early on was going to be the main priority...and so Henry and Andrew did. Unfortunately after Henry and Andrew had bowled out, Miller looked to take the game to the Moles and with some mighty blows he did so with vigour. With nothing coming from the other end it was all up to Miller and after a fine 70 he fell victim to the revitalised slow left armer George Cairns. The deceptively tricky Simon Barrett strangled the Cheam middle order for runs and picked up a tidy four wickets in the process including one superb caught and bowled. In the last over Cheam were bowled out for 131.

So, faced with the challenge chasing down 131 from 30 overs, The Moles opened up with the two Henrys...Kiwi Henry Nicholls and Henry Glynn. Glynn looked to be positive from word go and took the game to the Cheam opening bowlers dispatching Harrison and Miller straight and hard. The break-through came in the third over when Nicholls left one that jagged back viciously off the bowling off Harrison and was bowled for 1. Glynn was joined at the crease by the powerful Simon Barrett who had previously pulverised the Cheam bowling attack some two years previous. Unfortunately the introduction of spin duo Burns and Scott proved hard work for Barrett as he was dismissed for 6 off the bowling of Burns. The evergreen Paul Lawford joined Glynn at the crease and the two continued to tick things over. However, Glynn went to the bowling of Burns after a typically aggressive 33...disappointed in the fact that he really should have gone on. Youngster Westphal joined the veteran Lawford at the crease and the two batted very well in the middle overs to take Molesey to 108. When Westphal fell to Cohen for an important 23, it was left to the vintage Lawford to win the game with the support of Burge and Campbell. With 5 needed off the final 6 balls the battle-hardened, veteran, old dog, evergreen, vintage, son of Molesey Paul Lawford hit a crucial 4 to take the Moles to within touching distance. Unfortunately he was caught for a magnificent 49 leaving Ben Campbell to hit the winning runs and leave the Moles as winners. Man of the match goes to Lawford for his match winning captain’s innings. The Moles host freshly promoted Valley End next week at home in what should be an enthralling encounter.

East Molesey 1st XI will host Old Emanuel in the first round of the Surrey T20 competition at 5pm on Bank Holiday Monday 7^th May.

With big hitting, pink balls and coloured kit, the fixture is sure to be a great way to spend the evening and as always our well stocked bar will be open and the barbeque will be fired up.

The winners of this fixture will face an away tie against the winners of Old Wimbledonians v Ashtead so get down to Graburn Way and support your Moles all the way to the televised National Finals at Edgbaston in September!

EMCC is pleased to announce a new initiative to raise funds for the many projects we have planned for the Club both on and off the pitch. The plaques are very high quality, with an oak base and scrolls to the top and bottom. The bottom scroll is where your name will appear.

Plaque Sponsors can choose the name they wish to appear on the shield - Family name, nanes of sons or daughters, or in memory of a loved one. The plaques will then be mounted around the perimeter of the Clubhouse bar area.

The cost of the plaques are £125. This will give the Club £100 towards improvements to the pavilion, ground, or to purchase more training equipment.

We have already signed up 14 plaque sponsors on Colts Registration Night and are now announcing it to the wider club club membership. Caitlin Whitley selected to be Surrey Girls U13 Captain for 2012

We are delighted to announce that Caitlin Whitley has been selected to be co-captain of the Surrey U13 Girls. This is a great honour for her and the new Stoke Molesey Ladies squad. We wish her and the other Surrey Girls from the two Clubs (East Molesey and Stoke D'Abernon) every success for the coming season.

The squad continues to grow and we are pleased to see so many younger girls joining us for Sunday morning training.

If there are any other Girls or Ladies, of any age, keen to play cricket please call either Jon Elworthy (EMCC) on 077644 75002, or Andy Page (SDCC) on 07774 646625.

In addition to a wide spread poster campaign advertising the new Girls section, we are going out to four schools in the Molesey area providing training for children under the Chance to Shine scheme run by Elmbridge BC and Surrey CCC. Although both boys and girls will be trained, special emphasis is placed on getting more girls into playing the wonderful game of cricket!

The schools that have been signed up for this year are The Orchard, St.Lawrence, Hurst Park and Esher High School. The EHS course is a girl only scheme for the year 7 girls.

Once again Caitlin "well done" and we hope that you have a great season for both Surrey and Stoke Molesey!

With the 2012 season already underway lets make this a very positive year for the whole club. Please support club events, attend nets, help out if needed and give the help needed to the respective team captains. Let your captain know when you are available, respond to calls, texts and emails promptly and be willing to do the duties required on match day. Please also pay subs promptly and have your match fee ready at the end of a game.

The league season for all teams starts on Saturday 5^thof May ( Friendlies have already begun ), the Colts begin matches on April 25^thwith the Ladies team playing on Sunday 29^th April. Nets for senior teams will be on

Groundsman's update on the hosepipe ban!

I thought I would give you all an update on the hosepipe ban that you may have heard about and how it affects our cricket ground and your gardens.

There are now four separate authorities that control our water supply in Surrey. On the ground we come under Thames Water. Some two or so weeks ago, all the authorities announced a hosepipe ban for all domestic gardens and somehow decided to classify cricket grounds as gardens, don’t ask!

After I had spent my entire months minutes up on my mobile and liaised with many professional and club groundsmen across the country, Patrick on behalf of the club lodged an appeal to Thames Water on the grounds of Health and Safety, in that no watering of a cricket square could lead to a dangerous surface being played on.

In the interim time before we received a ruling on the 5^thApril, I had further communications, or tried to have, with Thames water, DEFRA and the environment agency to try and further clarify the situation. I did not get very far apart from at one point being told I could water a whole cricket square still with a watering can!

Anyway, finally on 5^th April Patrick received a reply giving us a limited exemption for the present on the grounds of health and safety. However, I have to carry out a stringent risk assessment before I am allowed to use a minimum of hosepipe watering to the pitches only and not the outfield, in order to provide a safe and adequate surface. I will have to keep documentation of these assessments which I will be doing in the form of a document I have produced with the help of a contractor friend of mine who has had to do this before. I will try and limit the use of the watering and use it at the best time to maximise effect.

As far as your gardens are concerned, you cannot use a hosepipe at all for your garden but can use a watering can or such watering drip feed systems that are on a timer and release small amounts of water directly into the soil, such as we have for the new bush plants at Graburn way. So if anyone sees me using the hosepipes, I will not be breaking any law and risking a fine for the club.

Please bear in mind this exemption can be taken away if they so decide. This is going to be a very difficult time for me as monitoring/using what little water I am allowed to, use of covers to keep rain and sun off pitches, is going to be even more crucial than ever.

I am obtaining a pedestrian sprayer so I can undertake a program of liquid fertilising to try and keep the grass healthy because I will not be able to use the normal granular fertiliser that requires watering in as soon as it is applied or it scorches the grass.

Dennis Constable with the 1st Eleven on Presidents in 2009

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing away of Dennis Constable. Dennis was one of the stalwarts of the Club in the 1940's and 50's and was the brother of one of EMCC's great players, Bernie Constable, who played many times for Surrey CCC.

Earlier this season Dennis's son Alan, and his wife Charmaine, generously donated a beautiful glass trophy to the Club to be awarded annually to the Young Player of the Year. This year the Constable Cup was won by Andrew Westphal.

Alan has written to Jon Elworthy, the Club Secretary stating,

"As you know cricket was a great part of fathers life and East Molesey CC was a major part of fathers cricketing life. I think that the day the club played the Australian Touring Team was one of the proudest of his cricketing time. Whenever he spoke about the day he always had a smile on his face and a little twinkle in his eye.

Dad played at the club before the war and apart from the war years, and the two years at Northampton, continued to play for the club until we moved to Basingstoke in 1957.

Although father had few memories of the day (he suffered from dementia towards the end of his life), the presidents day in 2009 was very special to him and he knew that he was part of something special on the day.

At the hospital on Tuesday evening we told him again about the Constable Cup, Charmaine was holding his hand at the time and when we told him he gave her hand a small squeeze.

Dad's funeral will take place on 16th December 2011 at Wessex Vale Crematorium, Hedge End near Southampton at 2.30pm.

One last thing, could I ask you to send me another copy of the club emblem so that a coffin plate can be made up, it will go in place of the rose that is normally put on the coffin lid."

Jon has sent a plaque to Alan as requested and Malcolm Lawford is to represent the Club at the service on the 16th December. I know the family will welcome anyone else from the Club who can attend.

We pass on our condolences to Dennis's family at this sad time.

Sam Burge top scores at Lord's

The Club Cricket Conference XI

On Monday 22nd August Sam Burge the 1st XI captain lived his dream of playing at the home of cricket. He represented the Club Cricket Conference, informally known as the 'CCC' against an MCC secretaries XI at Lords.

Sam's eagerness slightly got the better of him when he arrived so early that he had to ask for the gates to be open, just so that he could sit in the same seat that Sachin Tendulkar uses in the changing room!

After warming up on the Nursery ground, the CCC side won the toss and chose to bowl on a very 'club-like' wicket, which was clearly not the main concern of the head groundsman, Mick Hunt - who had a 4 day championship game as well as the one day county finals to prepare for.

The MCC side scored a very competitive 252 off their 50 overs which meant it was half time, and lunch. Sam reported that he indulged in the most delicious pumpkin soup followed by the 'most succulent' chicken he had ever tasted. Knowing he was batting 3 he decided to give the dessert a miss. 5 choices obviously wasn't enough for him!

When Sam's go came to have a bat, he took the most famous walk out to the middle in the world, walking from the balcony through the changing rooms and down the stairs through the long room and out onto the famous Lords surface, a walk which many dream of making. Thankfully he was able to get off the mark with a clip off his legs for four followed by a similar shot the next over off Kevin Dean, the former Derbyshire opening bowler. He was on 8.

The SIX

With the wicket drying out, the wicket started to become very conducive to spin, favouring the MCC side and they continued to frustrate the CCC top order with most batsman getting starts but failing to continue. Sam continued to accumulate runs and with the run rate in control, he was able to play the anchor role. Nevertheless, his moment came in the 29th over when he swept the off spinner 10 rows back into the tavern stand for a 6. A 6 at Lords....

It was all going swimmingly as the East Molesey captain moved into the 40's when the fun ended at an instant. Sam swept the ball to the fielder on the ring and was called through for a single by his teammate Scott McKenzie, an extremely tight single at the best of times especially when still on your knees playing the shot, wondering why you haven't found the gap! Despite a desperate attempt to make his ground, he was run out at the pavilion end for 41, a score which would end as his team's top score.

A ripple of applause from the MCC members met him as he went back through the long room, up the stairs into the changing room, avoiding all temptation to repeat the actions of Matt Prior by breaking a changing room window amidst his frustration of getting out.

With Sam now watching on, the CCC required 100 off the last 20 overs and subsequently 8 off the last over with only the 1 wicket left. When Sunbury opening bowler, Justin Granger hit a 6 off the second ball, the win was imminent however when he tried to repeat the feat he was adjudged LBW, only 2 short.

As the team went downstairs to shake the hands of the MCC players Sam was able to reflect on a truly special day.

Stoke Molesey Ladies stay top of the table with win over Epsom

Stoke Molesey Ladies won by 10 runs

Stoke Molesey Ladies travelled to Epsom keen to complete the away fixture of this pairing after the rain abandoned home tie on Wednesday night. A great game was served up as a fitting prelude to Epsom’s Presidents game which was held afterwards.
Epsom won the toss and put Stoke Molesey in to bat on a good looking wicket. Rosie McEwing opened with Megan Kapadia. Rosie was lucky to survive being dropped at short extra cover off of the first ball of the innings. However her luck ran out when she was caught off of her third ball to a good running catch by Nicky Bowes. 0 for 1. This bought captain Amy Page to the wicket who snicked her first ball past the Epsom keeper. At this point the Stoke Molesey girls were strangely quiet although this was probably due to the match starting at 10:00am on a Sunday rather than the state of the match.

Megan however seemed unfazed by the match position and dug in with her Captain to put the innings back on track. Both Megan and Amy batted sensibly respecting the good ball and punishing the bad ball to re-build the Stoke Molesey innings and see off the Epsom openers Sunderland and West who bowled good lines.
The change bowlers were less consistent with Page in particular putting away the bad balls ruthlessly. Page hit 7 fours in her 51 and retired in the 15th over of the alloted 20 overs. In came Charlotte Elworthy who ran aggressively and looked to hit he ball immediately. Megan continued to accumulate runs and hit 3 fours on her chanceless 31 not out. faced the final over and hit the last two balls through the covers for four ensuring Stoke Molesey posted a competitive total of 115 for 1.
Stoke Molesey knew they would have to bowl and field well to defend 115. Page threw the ball to the experienced McEwing and her opening spell of 3 overs went for just 13 runs.
Not to be out done opening form the other end Charlotte Elworthy’s allotted 4 overs went for just 9 runs including a maiden. The pressure was building on the Epsom batters as the bowlers were supported in the field by a committed fielding effort by all the Stoke Molesey players.
The first wicket to fall was that of Anda who was LBW to first change bowler Megan Kapidia who after carrying her bat through the Stoke Molesey innings took 3 for 20 as the Epsom batters tried to break the shackles of the good lines of the Stoke Molesey Bowlers.
The other 2 were sharp catches by Elworthy and Page. Millie Frost joined the attack and bowled full and straight and was rewarded with by bowling Stockbridge and Hodgson and supported with a good catch by McEwing to account for Bose.
With wickets starting to fall the Epsom players became more expansive with their stroke play and ran more aggressively to keep up with the required run rate. Page rotated her bowlers to ensure all her players were involved in the game and the Epsom a batters did not settle. Jenny Gluckman bowled a good over but Hugo took a liking to her straight lines and she was withdrawn from the attack. After another committed performance behind the stumps Alex Travers swaped the gloves with and bowled a solid over of leg spin. Louisa Bray Stoke Molesey’s other keeper also bowled a good over as Epsom became more desperate chasing down the target.
The Espom batters started taking more chances and the Stoke Molesey fielders held their composure resulting in run outs for Travers, Gluckman and McEwing. This commitment in the field was epitomised by Phoebe Eggar who in her first season in competitive cricket fielded with great commitment throughout the twenty overs.
With 9 wickets down and 15 required off of the final over Epsom closed their innings on 106 for 9 falling just 10 runs short in a well fought game. The young Stoke Molesey side game came through by sticking to the basics and playing good quality cricket.
Special thanks must go to the Epsom side who lent us 2 fielders as we only had 9; Drew Patrick who postponed Club rubbish duties to umpire for us and Rob McEwing who delayed going to the Oval to support the girls and run the scorebook.
Plus we must also must not forget all the parents who came along and gave up their Sunday morning lie in to support the girls. Thank you all for your continued support.

Sally Strang and Jon Elworthy win an OSCA!

One of the most popular events in the Surrey CCC calendar – the Outstanding Service to Cricket Awards – were held in the OCS Stand during this week’s CB40 victory over the Northamptonshire Steelbacks.

With seven worthy winners being honoured by both Surrey and their peers for the brilliant work they do supporting, coaching or administrating cricket at their local clubs, the night was an opportunity for a proper tribute to be paid to people whose unseen work is the key to any successful cricket club.
The wide range of cricketing passion throughout Surrey was recognised by the age range between the winners going from an eighteen year old to an 83 year old.
All were warmly applauded as they walked up to the stage to receive their award from Surrey’s Ashes winning England fast bowler Chris Tremlett, who was part of the presentation party alongside Surrey Chairman Richard Thompson; Chief Executive Richard Gould; trustees of the Surrey Cricket Board David Kingsmill and Steve McDonald and Jean-Marc Willems from Foxhills and Farleigh Golf Resorts, kind sponsors of this years awards.
Sally and Jon were nominated by Surrey to receive an OSCA for the work they did for EMCC's NatWest Cricketforce day on 1st April.

NatWest CricketForce Award – East Molesey CC

East Molesey CC boast a large and vibrant membership on the field and used this year’s NatWest CricketForce as an opportunity to come together off the field and give the club a real lift.
Including staff and players from Surrey County Cricket Club who volunteered for the day, the club boasted 150+ workers, with another fifteen people volunteering through Elmbridge and the local community.
The event saw major gardening and replanting happen across the ground; the far end getting a face lift with the clearance of old railings and fencing and a new row of hedges planted. The club’s pavilion had a complete paint job inside and out, the finishing touch to a major refurbishment of the toilets and showers that had happened in the build up.

With eleven local companies providing free or discounted materials – both Jon Elworthy and Sally Strang were deemed well deserving award winners.

Unfortunately Sally was away on holiday, but we hope to get someone from Surrey to present her Award at the Clubs Award night on the 17th September.

We are delighted to report that the Reigate Priory Ladies suffered their first defeat in 2 years at the hands of a very well organised Stoke Molesey team in a 30 over match played at Reigate on the evening of August 3rd.

In the absence of regular skipper Amy Page (away on Surrey duty), the SM ladies were led by Rosie McEwing who starred with bat and ball. SM batted first and posted 89 for 2 in their 15 over innings. McEwing and Megan Kapadia featured in a 53 run opening partnership, during the course of which Amy Page was a surprise late arrival at the ground, having driven straight to Reigate from her Surrey match when she heard that her team was short of players. Amy joined Rosie on the fall of the second wicket and the pair shared a quick fire 30 run partnership, with Amy finishing on 17* and Rosie on 41*.

A par score for 15 overs is 110, so the SM Ladies knew that a strong performance in the field was an essential requirement. Rosie gave them the perfect start by clean bowling Camilla Thrush with her first ball and skipper Vicky Howard with her sixth. Suzie Wood followed Rosie's impressive lead by claiming the wicket of Ali Kershaw with her first ball and the superb opening spell was capped by a third wicket for Rosie in her second over, leaving the hosts reeling on 4 for 3.

From that moment onwards, the SM ladies had complete control of the Reigate reply and, despite some brave final over running, the Reigate ladies Closed their innings 20 runs short of the SM total on 69 for 5. Rosie McEwing was the pick of the bowlers finishing her 3 over spell with 3 for 24.

There was plenty to like about the way the Stoke Molesey ladies performed in this match, the highlight being their fielding performance and they way they backed each other and built pressure on the opposition batsmen.

After his fantastic double century for England against India Kevin Pietersen made sure his exciting week peaked by visiting East Molesey CC to pass on some words of wisdom and sign hundreds of autographs for those taking part in the LCA coaching course that the club was hosting.

His arrival was greeted by cheers from the kids (screams from some of mothers, and one over excited father - the Club Secretary) After a short introduction to the Club, he moved on to the pitch to lead the different age groups in some valuable batting practice.

Each group asked him questions, and had the items they had brought to the days lesson signed by the great man.

All were happy apart from one young sibling, who when his autograph book was returned to him stated "that's not an autograph, that's a scribble! Do it again properly!" KP laughed, duly did as he was told, and even Twittered about it later stating he thought it was "so cute". We like to keep up the standards at EMCC KP!

Thanks must go to Richard Browning and Richard Logan of LCA for arranging the visit and organising a truly brilliant training program throughout the week.

How on earth they are going to follow this next year we just don't know. Mind you there is also pressure on the Club from the mothers, who have become spoilt by the selection of superstars the Club is attracting KP, Rick Astley - who's next? We understand Brad is staying in Richmond. Watch this space!

Before he left Kevin allowed his portrait to be taken as part of the "snapshot" 2011 photographic project the Club is undertaking with Chris Bishop. The photograph is now on show in the Pavilion.

The Luddites – Never Gonna Give You OUT!

After the success of lasts years “accidental” outside concert we decided to do it properly this year with a full covered stage, outside bars and BBQ’s. We also increased the number of tickets available, but could still have sold out twice over. Hopefully next year we will increase the number of tickets to allow even more of our Members and friends to attend. Remember to order as soon as you hear about it next year as it will still be on a “first come, first served basis”. This year we sent out the Clarions to the Club Members two weeks before the general release, even so some missed out. Sorry, but you have to be quicker.

The Luddites - Graham Stack, Simon Mattacks and their drummer called R. Astley - came on after a great warm up by The Suburban Superstars (Mel King and Pete Wilson). The band was dressed in full combat gear and was absolutely brilliant. They ran through their playlist at top speed and Rick wasn’t even put off by having 10 kids three feet from his drum kit. The kids seemed to enjoy themselves and we are sure the playgrounds of Molesey on Monday were filled with slightly deaf kids singing songs from the night before and practicing their air guitars and drums. (Thankfully there have been no reports of the children of the parish verbally abusing their parents or teachers in a Northern accent!)

Not only were the band superb, so were the helpers and organisers whose hard work made the evening such a success. Special mention must go to Sally Strang, Sarah Mooney, Lucinda Riggs and Clive Goodchild who worked tirelessly before, during, and after the concert.

Andrew Westphal stars for Surrey U17

EMCC colts player Andrew Westphal played a key role for the Surrey U17 side this week against Middlesex CCC at Weybridge. Andrew returned the excellent figures of 4-48 in the 2 day match as Surrey went on to win the game on first innings. Andrew has featured regularly in the East Molesey 1st XI this season producing some promising performances particularly with the ball that bode well for both his and the club's future. He will be hoping to continue this good form on Saturday as the 1st XI take on Old Whitgiftians CC at Graburn Way.

Summer Exhibitions at EMCC

We are planning something new for the Summer at the Club. We have been in contact with two well known artists of the cricket world, who will be coming to exhibit at the Club.

Each artist will be with us for a month before holding a joint exhibition of their work for the month after.

The shows will open with a private viewing of the images and paintings.

We hope you will enjoy this new experience at the Club.

Chris Bishop

Chris is a Photographer and well known in the world of cricket.

He also has over 25 years experience as a professional photographer working for a wide range of magazines, PR and advertising clients both in the UK and internationally. In the last few years he has concentrated on video and interactive media work for the internet and personal portrait projects.

Rory Hamilton-Brown

Currently working on “The Face of Cricket” a series of photographs of personalities from all areas of the game with associated Benefit year exhibitions at The Rose Bowl, Lords, the Guildford Cricket Festival and the Hackwood Art Festival.

Chris will be exhibiting at the Club from Friday 15th July - Thursday 11th August.

Included in the exhibition will be images Chris took at the NatWest Cricketforce day we held in April and also photographs he has taken recently at various events at the Club. This is part of a season long photographic study of the Club.

We are all used to seeing photographs of the teams and other trophy memorabilia at the Club (although ours is all being scanned at the moment) so we thought it would be nice to record the “everyday” at the ground, from Colts training, the work of the Committee, through to Barry G on his mower. Images like these will be available to you purchase either framed or unframed.

We hope that by the end of the season he will have captured the spirit, and characters, at the Club. With the Club changing fast and developments moving ahead we thought it would be good to "time capsule" the 2011 season for future generations.

We are also proposing to make selected images available for sale to help raise funds for the the new second pitch.

Christina Pierce

Acclaimed cricket artist, Christina Pierce, spent her childhood in Cornwall where her love of the game grew from her cricket coach father. She graduated from Central School of Art, London, and has exhibited extensively in the UK and abroad.

Christina will be exhibiting at the Club from Friday 9th August - Thursday 9th September.

Her paintings hang on the walls of both county cricket and England players as well as businesses and private collectors and her shows include the Royal Academy of Art, Lords and Brit Oval. Her most recent commission is a portrait of England captain Andrew Strauss.

Padding up

In addition to this she usually produces a wonderful yearly Diary which we will have on sale during the exhibition.

The Art of Cricket 2011 Calendar

The ART OF CRICKET YEARBOOK AND DESK DIARY has been replaced this year with the ART OF CRICKET CALENDAR 2011. Chrissy will be continuing the DESK DIARY next year, 2012.

The calendar is a CD sized, glossy, page a month calendar with oil paintings by Christina Pierce, photographs by our other Summer exhibitor Christopher Bishop and a foreword by England captain, Andrew Strauss.

The front cover is a painting of Andrew Strauss celebrating his 100 runs against the Aussies in the famous 2005 Ashes series, done for his benefit last year. Wide Ball has been selected by the Australian Cricket Art Prize to be shown on their touring exhibition.

At the end of Christina's month we are proposing to hold a joint exhibition of Christina's work and the photographs Chris Bishop will have taken of the Club over the Season. The dates of this exhibition will be confirmed shortly.

SUMMER STRINGS EVENING AT THE EMCC

On Friday 10th June the EMCC hosted a truly wonderful evening of “American and English String Music” at the Club house. The Kinston University Chamber Orchestra played a selection of pieces by various composers such as Rutter, Elgar, Copland, Barber, Joplin and Gershwin.

Originally it was booked as an open air concert, but with the threat of rain present all afternoon and evening it was decided to perform indoors with speakers positioned outside for those who could not squeeze in.

The audience, young and old were treated to a truly wonderful performance, with each piece being introduced by the two guest American conductors, Henry Duitman and Kevin Tutt.

The evening was such a great success (apparently the Club has very good acoustics) that we are in discussions with Kingston University to hold more events, including an all-day Jazz festival in 2012.

Please look out for new event posters at the Club, and messages and texts via Clarion, advertising future shows and performances – we don’t want you to miss any of these really special occasions for which the Club is gaining quite a reputation for.

Natwest Cricketforce Day 2011

On Friday 1^st April, the members of East Molesey Cricket Club swapped their suits for overalls, their briefcases for paintbrushes and their rulers for spirit levels, as the club hosted its first ever ‘Natwest Cricketforce Day.’ This involved preparing the clubs grounds and facilities for the beginning of the new season with the aid of willing helpers from Surrey County Cricket Club and Natwest.

The day was a huge success with a number of crucial jobs having been achieved including the re-painting of the pavilion, the repairing of the sightscreens, the planting of a new hedgerow along Graburn Way and much more. The club is now looking in great shape for the start of the season and should provide all members with one of the most picturesque grounds in the county at which to both play and watch cricket.

There was a terrific atmosphere throughout the day with everybody, young or old, mucking together with a common aim in mind. There was a real treat in the afternoon when around fifteen Surrey 1^st XI players arrived to help with the work as well as conducting a skills clinic for the large number of colts who were present. Their enthusiasm and willingness to help was a credit to themselves and the colts certainly appreciated this opportunity to get up close and personal with their heroes. Sadly, star player Mark Ramprakash could not be there on the day but has promised to return to the club in the near future to mark the opening of the new honours boards in the pavilion so watch this space!
